Condition
Fractures and injuries
A fracture is a broken bone. Some are obvious, with deformity and inability to use the limb; others, such as a wrist fracture after a fall or a hip fracture in an older person, can be mistaken for a sprain. The centre provides accident and trauma care at any hour, with digital X-ray, an operation theatre with C-arm imaging, and physiotherapy for recovery all in the same building.
What it feels like
- Pain that is worse when the limb is moved or weight is put through it
- Swelling and bruising, which may take hours to appear
- Deformity, or the limb lying at an unusual angle
- A grating feeling, or a snap felt at the moment of injury
- Numbness or tingling beyond the injury
Common causes
Falls
The most common cause at every age: wrist, shoulder and hip fractures in adults, forearm fractures in children.
Road accidents
High-energy injuries that can involve several bones, the pelvis and the spine, and need the trauma team.
Sports and work injuries
Fractures of the hand, ankle and collarbone, and stress fractures from repeated loading.
Fragility fractures
In osteoporosis, bones can break with a minor fall or even without one, particularly the wrist, spine and hip.
When to seek care straight away
Be seen the same day, or call the emergency line, if:
- An open wound over the injury, or bone visible through the skin
- Deformity, or a limb that cannot be moved or bear weight
- Numbness, coldness or paleness of the hand or foot beyond the injury
- Injury to the head, neck, back or pelvis, or any injury after a road accident
How it is assessed at the centre
- 01Immediate assessment of the injury and of the circulation and nerves beyond it.
- 02Digital X-ray on site, with a CT scan arranged for complex fractures of joints, the pelvis or the spine.
- 03A decision on whether the fracture can be treated in a cast or splint, or needs an operation to realign and fix the bone.
Treatment options
Casts, splints and slings
Stable fractures are immobilised and checked with follow-up X-rays as they heal.
Reduction and fixation
Displaced or unstable fractures are realigned and held with plates, screws, nails or external fixators in the operation theatre, using C-arm imaging during the procedure.
Hand and wrist injuries
Fractures, tendon and nerve injuries of the hand are treated by the hand surgery service, including microsurgery where needed.
Rehabilitation
Physiotherapy at the on-site department to restore movement and strength once the bone has healed enough.
Questions patients ask
- What should I do immediately after an injury?
- Keep the injured part still, support it in the position found, apply a cold pack wrapped in cloth, and cover any wound with a clean dressing. Do not try to straighten a deformed limb. Then call the emergency line, 98450 75749, or come to the centre.
- Do all fractures need surgery?
- No. Many fractures heal well in a cast or splint. Surgery is used when the bone is displaced, unstable, involves a joint surface, or when early movement is important, as with hip fractures.
- Is the emergency line open at night?
- Yes. Accident and trauma care is available at any hour on 98450 75749.
- How do I book a consultation?
- Call 080 2664 3970 or 96201 51588 during consultation hours, Monday to Saturday, 10.00 am to 1.00 pm and 5.00 pm to 8.00 pm.

Related conditions
- Sports injuriesSports injuries range from a simple sprain that needs a week of rest to a torn ligament that needs reconstruction.
- Hand and wrist painThe hand packs bones, joints, tendons and nerves into a small space, so even minor problems can interfere with work and daily life.
- Hip painPain from the hip joint itself is usually felt in the groin or the front of the thigh, and is worst on walking, standing up from a chair or putting on shoes.
